Introducing the Havanese

Informative articles about the Havanese, a great starting point for those who are new to the breed.

Big Dogs Living With Small Dogs

Havanese_and_GoldenFor 5 years I researched and studied what small dog would best compliment our Golden gang. What "little" dog had all the characteristics I was looking for? I wanted a dog that was good with children, intelligent, fun-loving, enjoyed the out-of-doors, and finally beautiful. To be honest I was looking for everything I had in a Golden but smaller. What I landed on was the Havanese. They are NOT little Goldens but they do meet all the criteria plus some.

Breed Overview

The Havanese breed descends from old-world Bichon types of small companion dogs such as antique versions of the Maltese and the Caniche. They are neither Terriers nor Spaniels. This group of small longhaired dogs is very old and originated in the Mediterranean in pre-Christian times. From the original antique “small dog", numerous varieties evolved.

Havanese and Allergies

allergiesYou may have heard that Havanese are non-shedding and hypo-allergenic. You or other family members have allergies and/or asthma, so is a Havanese a good choice of pet for you? Maybe yes. but maybe not. An estimated 10 to 15 percent of the population is allergic to animals; even so, approximately 1/3 of these choose to live with at least one pet in their household. Choosing and living with a Havanese despite having allergies needs a basic understanding of pet allergies and a few sensible guidelines.

Havanese and Cats

havanese_and_catsMany animal lovers have multi pet households which may include an assortment of different species. While no one ever questions how a new puppy will get a long with the fish; concerns over how it will get along with the resident cat arise much more frequently. It is an old myth that dogs and cats are sworn enemies.

Havanese and Children

havanese_and_kidsThoughts of dogs and children bring to mind ideals of unconditional love, constant playmates and devoted companions. However, the picture may not be so rosy unless care is taken to select the right dog. A dog for the kids is only a good idea if the whole family is ready and committed to the care of its new canine family member.

Males vs. Females

male_female_pupsWhen people talk about gender variations, generally they are talking about intact dogs. In the Havanese, many people find intact males easier to live with than intact females as the males are generally more easygoing, mellow and laid back as well as gentler, calmer, and more patient than their intact female counterparts.
